Periodontal disease is a family of related diseases that have a common underlying chain of events or pathogenesis. It re-sults from the complex interplay of various pathogenic events caused by the microbial challenge of dental plaque and modi-fiers, and/or factors that modify host response mechanisms or alter innate susceptibility. In periodontal disease, the compo-nents of host response that normally provide protection are the same ones that accomplish destruction.en_US
