The role of nuclear weapons in the New World Order NO) is one of the most pressing and important long-tenn security issues confronting those who would make this a safer and better world. The end of the Soviet state, and the end of the bipolar tensions which have dominated international relations since 1945, have not removed nuclear weapons from the face of the earth. These weapons are still with us, and they cannot be simply set aside and ignored. Under the arrangements of the Old World Order (OWO) there were certainly political advantages to having a declared nuclear arsenal. For instance, all the permanent members of the UN Security Council were, and still are, nuclear armed, and the homelands of these states have never been subjected to any kind of direct military threat. This article addressess the following two questions. Will nuclear weapons continue to confer such political advantage in Ihe NWO, and will s&ates therefore maintain or seek to acquire nuclear weapons?
