Y-ENGAGED BUDDHISM IN TAIWAN AND ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO CIVIL SOCIETY That Taiwan has developed a healthy civil society, arguably the first in ethnic Chinese civil society, is well known. Much work has been done so far by Hsiao, Chang, Weller and others on the contribution of self-help movements and NGOs in this development, but so far, with the exception of Weller, little has been done of the part played by religious groups. This paper will explore the roles of Christian and Buddhist groups have played in the development of Taiwan's civil society. In so doing it will accomplish two purposes: to fill this void in the literature, and to continue the work of Herbert and others that, contrary to earlier European theory, religion can make positive contributions to civil society.
