Greater Manchester Police (GMP) decided to introduce a new training programme on communication skills following concern among Chief Officers that the force was underperforming compared to its most similar group of forces with regards to levels of victim satisfaction. An opportunity was identified through ongoing collaboration with the Research Analysis and Information Unit (RAI) to evaluate the impact of any new training intervention in GMP.

An opportunity was identified through ongoing collaboration with the Research Analysis and Information Unit (RAI) to evaluate the impact of any new training intervention in GMP. The College of Policing has worked in collaboration with GMP to design the evaluation methodology, and – drawing on findings from a recent review of training and behaviour change – the scenario based learning element of the course.3 An external provider developed the classroom content of the training course in collaboration with GMP. This technical report outlines the design, methods and results of a two-group randomised control trial undertaken in Greater Manchester Police (GMP) between September 2011 and June 2012.
