Tourism has emerged as possibly the single largest industry in Australia and New Zealand, and it is therefore good to see the appearance of a text which focuses upon the planning and policy aspects of this phenomenon in the context of these two countries. The book is a compilation of contributed case studies, seven from Australia and four from New Zealand, which according to the editors reflect current issues and practices in the field. Recognising that different kinds of physical environment have their own policy and planning challenges, the case studies are divided into three sections, depending on whether the context is a `natural area', `rural area' or 'urban area'. The editors then effectively `book-end' each of these sections with a general introduction to the pertinent issues, and a concluding chapter on `questions and issues'. The book as a whole commences with a general introduction to planning and policy in Australia and New Zealand, and is wrapped up by a chapter of overall conclusions.
