The v2 vibration of the carbonate species
The frequency of the V2i.r. active out-of-plane mode of the planar carbonate species in complexes of known crystal structure in a variety of coordination and site symmetry types varies between 820 and 880 cm-1. Within the context of the observed geometries and frequencies and an analysis of the motion of the CO3 system normal to the CO3 plane, the frequency is found to depend only on the variation in the force constant, the kinetic energy term being invariant. A tentative correlation with possible diagnostic applications is drawn between the ?2 frequency and site symmetry/coordination type.
