Leadership and the Clinician Manager - A Critical Approach
The clinician manager role has been surprisingly under-researched in Australia, and more so in the case of doctors. A study of clinician managers, and their leadership roles in public hospitals, seems long overdue. Such a study, which looks at how clinician managers lead their clinical units in exemplary ways, would fill a substantial gap in the literature and help dispel some of the common stereotypes that prevail about doctors in clinician management roles. The paper examines the public hospital setting, some relevant theories of leadership, and then develops a critical approach to studying the leadership role(s) of clinician managers. Through adopting such an approach, new insights will be gained on public sector leadership.
