Dear colleagues: Proceedings of the First International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology were scheduled to be published in September, 2005. All of us expected to receive the books at this time. At the end of August, however, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and caused several levee breaches. More than 80% of New Orleans was under water. It was the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States. Along with many institutions, our New Orleans office and the printing company contracted for printing our proceedings were submerged for four weeks. Printed materials and most properties were destroyed. Compared with the loss of more than 1,000 lives in New Orleans during the hurricane, however, the property loss is inconsequential. The natural disaster interrupted our release schedule and further plans. We apologize we were unable to release and deliver the proceedings to you as we had scheduled and promised before. As a remedial measure, we have decided to produce and send a CD with e-version of the proceedings to you in February 2006. The hard copy proceedings with the same format will be re-published later. Hopefully you can understand this plan. We have set up an office in Houston to work on this issue. We are also sorry we were unable to reply to your inquiries in a timely fashion on the proceedings because our all communications were interrupted by the hurricane. A part of full papers have been recommended to Engineering in Life Science and will be published in special issues in early 2006. Special Issue I is expected to be released in February 2006, while Special Issue II will be published in either April or August depending on space. Authors of these papers in Special Issue I should have been contacted by editors of Engineering of Life Science. Your papers will be published in 1 or 2 of the following publications. You may need them for citations or to report to your institutions: 1. ISBN: 0-9768853-4-4 WILLIAM G. LYON, JIHUA J. HONG, RAMESH K. REDDY, EDS. PROCEEDINGS OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, Vol. (I), AMERICAN SCIENCE PRESS, NEW ORLEANS, 2005. (Papers in Sessions 01-01 ~01-16, 02-01~02-08 and 05-01 ~ 05-05 are collected in this volume) 2. ISBN: 0-9768853-5-2 WILLIAM G. LYON, JIHUA J. HONG, RAMESH K. REDDY, EDS. ENGINEERING IN LIFE SCIENCE, SPECIAL ISSUE ON ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (I), FEB., 2006. (IN PRESS) 4.
