Rule Schema as a Representational Framework for Multimedia and its Application to Algorithmic Music Composition

Abstract

Design Rule Schema (DRS) was first developed as a framework for representing various design knowledge. Its application has since been demonstrated in automatic rule generation with given design elements. DRS has been utilised in a number of complicated design problems and its effectiveness and efficiency has been verified in generating design rules and manipulating design knowledge. Unlike Shape Grammar or Rewrite Rules, RS-based rules can contain multiple transformation operators and produces a more diverse and creative range of solutions. In this paper, the DRS is modified and renamed Rule Schema (RS), in order to expand its use for various multimedia types. This paper will apply the concepts of RS to music composition and evaluate its suitability.
