dc.description.abstractIn this thesis I discuss the collaborative monolithic design and testing of microfabricated diffractive mirrors integrated into a microfabricated ion trap. I discuss the necessary optical and electrical systems needed to trap 174Yb+ ions. From the diffractive mirrors we measured a collection efficiency of more than 4% per ion fluorescence photon, while obtaining diffraction limited ion images.
