Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is one of the major tropical fruit crops worldwide; however, commercial and local production is reduced by several diseases and pests. Papaya Ringspot Virus type P (PRSV-P) is a serious disease of Carica papaya, and all known varieties of papaya are susceptible. Vasconcellea parviflora is a PRSV-P susceptible species. Researchers have identified PRSV-P resistant genes in Vasconcellea spp., which were formerly included in the genus Carica.
