Connecting Conversations: Finding Ways Forward for Arts Educators
This chapter is a re-versioning of the plenary keynote given at the conclusion of the World Alliance of Arts Educators Summit, held at Griffith University, Brisbane, 26–28 November 2014. In that keynote, I drew together some of the threads that had emerged during the conference, connecting the conversations we had as an international arts education community during the time we spent together. In this chapter I expand on those conversations, drawing from my notes collected during the conference, and connecting again with the authors in this handbook from whom I have included statements that may be regarded as reinforcing or challenging. I have attempted to signal the value of discussion and conversation by employing conversational devices within the chapter. These include messages from keynote speakers, asides from delegates and contributors to this handbook, vexing questions and some conversational poems. I conclude with a call to arms for arts educators, worldwide, to continue to nourish and sustain a collaborative community working together with shared goals: to overcome “artcism” as we inspire future generations of arts educators and to ensure that we work towards ensuring access to a fully rounded arts education for all children and young people.
