Bacteria are the most highly evolved organisms on earth. In this lecture Professor Beacham considers bacteria as both friend and foe: As remarkable models for understanding the cell, and for the provision of the tools of 'genetic engineering' (recombinant DNA technology); but also as rapidly evolving, ever changing, agents of infectious disease - due to their capacity to change their own genetic constitution in remarkable ways.Bacteria are the most highly evolved organisms on earth.
