International schools are generally made up of students from forty to sixty different countries, including some students from the host country. Students typically attend an international school because one or both of their parents are working in the host country as expatriates. In most cases, schools are located somewhere in or on the outskirts of a city, with teachers and families living in the city and commuting to school. Characteristic of these settings is the fact that the school exists within a host-country culture that is potentially very different from the home cultures of its students. This in essence makes every local cultural event a possible learning experience for students and families. In many international schools teachers follow a prescribed curriculum (predominantly British or American), and to varying degrees include aspects of the surrounding culture. Some teachers have the flexibility, coupled with the desire, to enhance programs and design entire units based on events occurring in the community. These teachers embrace the culture, its festivals, customs, and traditions, and do their best to organize firsthand experiences for students.
