Within the healthcare setting, people are vulnerable to infection or colonisation by a number of micro-organisms. While this is inevitable in some cases, in the majority it is not. Infection prevention and control is the responsibility of every member of the healthcare team. In this chapter, you will learn how infection prevention and control is an essential part of the safety and quality system of the healthcare organisation. You will be introduced to the scientific basis of infection and disease, the mechanisms by which micro-organisms cause infection and disease, and the variety of ways in which they are transmitted from one person to another. While the human body has a number of natural defences against disease, patients can have many risk factors that increase their susceptibility to infection. The processes involved in risk management will be described, and you will learn how to apply them in your wok environment. Antimicrobial resistance and its mechanisms will be described, and you will learn how to prevent hospital-acquired infections and the development of antimicrobial resistance through the application of appropriate procedures and precautions.
