Cured concrete is a low-loss insulating material. A copper rod placed in a concrete beam (350 × 100 × 100 mm 3 ) was exposed to microwave radiation (1-5 GHz) from a slot antenna optimised for impedance matching to the concrete surface. The copper rod enhanced the power inside the concrete samples. Surface measurements of the scattered electric field show a series of interference nulls reaching amplitude of -30 dB. This paper reports experimental measurements and modeling results of the surface electric field. Particle swarm optimization was used to match the modelled to the experimental E-field by varying the relative permittivity and electric conductivity. The technique was used to determine the electromagnetic properties of cured concrete in the frequency range 1-5 GHz.
