Epidemiology and health promotion are closely associated when it comes to the health of the population. The study of the determinants and the distribution of a disease in specific populations provides relevant information for control of the health problem by strategies that include health education, change of public policies, changes in environments and community action.1 This chapter focuses on epidemiological perspectives, yet it is geared more towards the global distribution of oral diseases and problems that most frequently affect children and adolescents. The determinants of these diseases are discussed in depth in the other chapters of this book. Oral disorders that most frequently affect children and adolescents are dental caries, periodontal disease, dental trauma, dental erosion and malocclusion. In order to better to organize the epidemiological data on the main oral health problems affecting children and adolescents in the world, data will be presented for four age groups; under5 years; 5-6 years; 12 years and 1 5 years or over, and data on prevalence, severity and trends will be presented. Among the numerous epidemiological studies we preferentially selected national studies or those that presented well-defined methodological criteria and more recent representative samples.
