This chapter examines why a democratic tradition failed to develop in Islam historically and presents an overview of the ongoing debate about Islam and democracy in the Muslim world today. It discusses calls for democracy across the Muslim world both in the lead up to and in the aftermath of the Arab Spring. The chapter also considers Islamist calls for a caliphate or Islamic state in light of competing discourses on political secularism in Islam.
