Widening higher education opportunities for students with intellectual disabilities: An overview of program issues and policy implications

Abstract

New possibilities and challenges arise in extending the benefits of postsecondary education to people with intellectual and development disabilities.1 Programs and initiatives that aim to include people with intellectual disabilities in postsecondary settings have been available for several decades in various forms in Canada (see Chapter 4) and the United States (see Chapters 5 and 6) and in more recent years in Europe (especially Iceland - see Chapter 7 and Ireland - see Chapter 9) and Australia (see Chapters 8 and 10).
