Equal rating inverters operating with different power set points may experience circulating power during unpredictable cases such as faults on a heavy load site due to a large mismatch between load consumption and power generation. This momentarily circulating power increases the dc-link voltage of the inverter and exceeds the voltage limit, leading to inverter shutdown for safety purposes. To overcome this issue, this paper proposes a control method that limits the dc-link voltage of an inverter during unusual events by using a series connected resistor with a switch across the dc-link capacitor. A detailed simulation is performed using Matlab/SimPowerSystems to validate the concept presented and justify the effectiveness of the control approach.
