Research Background: Design conferences are typically focused on communication challenges, clients and sustainability issues. Rarely is typography considered as a meaningful art form within the broader context of design. In recent years, the emerging interest in typography as an art form has revealed a specialist research niche among designers and design students. The Typism Conference and accompanying book asks whether there is enough renewed interest in typography as an art form to sustain a research culture around the topic. Typism not only preserves the culture, tradition, and history of type and typography; the highlight of activities is creating and implementing a bi-annual conference where type designers, type publishers, graphic and typographic designers, researchers, web and application developers and typography aficionados meet to discuss trends, technology, education and best practices. Research Contribution: This conference represents the first Australian effort to encourage the development of unified strategies, guidelines and a community, with the long-range goal of fostering greater integrity in typography research worldwide. The Typism Conference featured of series of keynote speakers exploring conference themes and related topics. In keeping with past conferences, there was ample opportunities for interaction between participants, including during all sessions, pre-conference workshops and satellite symposia. Research Significance: The Typism Brand has established Griffith University and the Gold Coast as a centre for typographic excellence. With 3000+ on the mailing list, many thousands of contributions to the book and over 60,000 followers on social media, Typism is now a clear and respected voice in the online discussion.en_US
