D: My Favourite Things (MFT) is a new 30-minute composition for solo percussion by the performer/composer/researcher, Tomlinson. This work was premiered at the art series Paint it Red, in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. The work itself draws heavily on indeterminacy of John Cage, deep listening of Pauline Oliveros, and extends the work of Soundings from Tomlinson/Griswold. In addition it references and extends significant compositions of Alvin Lucier, Schwitters/Tomlinson, and Griswold. CONTRIBUTION: MFT examines different modes of listening and interacting with sound in live performance. As a non-directional, ephemeral sound composition, it explores kinetic sculpture, audience participation, sound poetry, improvisation and experimental music. The work is in six parts; Ropes - using the percussive motion and sound waves of ropes to create a visual energy with sonic residue; Cymbal - an extended solo for bowed cymbal and voice, exploring frequency combinations of the instrument; Bubblewrap - passing out bubblewrap throughout the audience, creating a surround sound performance piece that references fire and/or rain, transforming the listening field; Triangle - an exploration of the space through constantly transforming strikes on the triangle; Paper - drawing with pencils on paper, as a jazz drummer with brushes; Sounding - using found objects to excite and examine the acoustics of the performance space. SIGNIFICANCE: This new percussion solo was composed by Tomlinson in response to a request to present a solo set as part of the Brisbane based series Paint it Red. It has since been performed at the Performers' Present Festival at Yong Seuw Toh Conservatory in Singapore, and more recently to critical acclaim at the Fresh Sound series in San Diego. As a live performance piece it does not lend itself to the recorded medium alone. Therefore significant uptake of the work and ideas within it have been shared through performance. This work continues to tour in 2017/18.
