Dear Editor, We congratulate Dr. Montaner and colleagues on their paper [7] which, like our previous studies in children with protracted bacterial bronchitis [5] and bronchiectasis [1], found Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis as the predominant pathogens cultured from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in those suspected of chronic lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI). We thank the Spanish team for citing our work. However, we wish to correct the statement in the “Introduction” that “Several studies assessed a possible correlation between BALF and nasopharyngeal swab (NPS) specimens in terms of chronic LRTI etiology, with inconsistent results” (references no. 26–28). Data from our multi-center studies are consistent and are summarized below.
