As a child I would lay my ear against the dining room table, while my sister scratched imagined messages to me from the other end. But just hearing this secret sound – inaudible to others in the space who listened merely through the medium of air – had the special magic of intimacy: a shared understanding, an ‘unknowing’ knowingness.
