To the Editor, The recent article by Caldwell et al. [1] calls for improved transparency in sport and exercise science research, with a focus on registered reports [2]. The importance of the article, and similar articles from other disciplines (e.g., [3,4,5,6]), cannot be overstated. In our opinion, the ‘call for action’ could be era-defining for open science practices in our field. Caldwell et al. [1] eloquently explain registered reports, a central feature of open science and the open science framework (OSF) [2]. An example publication model is also provided, showing readers how registered reports are implemented—a process that may be unfamiliar to many researchers. In support of the ‘call to action’, we wish to highlight another significant component of open science—the release of analytical materials (i.e., data and code used for analysis) alongside a manuscript—with the hope to further improve transparency and reproducibility in sport and exercise science research.
