Belonging to the research fields of intercultural musicology and intercultural music performance practice, this lecture-recital addresses the following research questions: 1. Which methods, strategies and performance practices allow Western-trained flautists to access and produce culturally-informed interpretations and performances of Reza Vali's flute compositions based on the Dastgāh-Maqām System? 2. How is the Dastgāh-Maqām System integrated into the compositional structure of Reza Vali's works for Western flute? Research Contribution This lecture-recital is the first investigation that analyses challenges for Western-trained flautists performing Iranian music and provides suggestions for a culturally-informed performance practice. The lecture-recital fills a gap in academic scholarship as there has never been a musical analysis on the Concerto for Flute and Orchestra or Zānd: Calligraphy No. 2 nor has there been a performance of these works. Research Significance The Iranian Dastgāh-Maqām System's implementation in Vali's flute repertoire provides Western-trained flautists with an introduction to Iranian music. A musical analysis and performance guidelines for Vali's music will facilitate authenticity in these works' interpretation and performance from a culturally-informed perspective, which may be applicable to other intercultural repertoires' performance.
