dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Mass incident is an unavoidable social problem in current Chinese social context during rapid social and economic development time in China. Mass incidents become increasingly serious and prevalent in recent years. There are increasing number of people participating in the incidence and its impact on the society become more aversive. Most previous studies focus on the causes of mass incidence using descriptive methods. Few studies have analysed behavior characteristics of the participants of mass incidence in China. This paper aims to explore behaviours characteristics of the participants from sociological and psychological perspectives, to propose models of bevhavioural characteristics, and to predict the trend and occurrence of mass incidence in China based on the proposed behaviour models in this study. Methods: A cross sectional study design was used. There were 465 participants who participated mass incidents, and 2001 gross root government public servant from 26 districts in ChongQing China responded to the survey. Descriptive statistics analysis method was used to describe the trend of mass incidents for this paper. Results Ten models have been developed through both quantitative data that were collected through the study and these include: 1. Mass incidence increases with the social and economic development. 2. In social transition time, with the improvement of people's educational level, the occurrence of mass incidence is facilitated; 3. Mass incidence becomes more strategic and political; 4. Individual event can develop into organized and big mass incidence depending on the nature of the event; 5. Sensitive events which are related to residents' interest can trigger the occurrence of mass incidence. 6. Active leaders for the mass incidence determine the length and duration of mass incidence; 7. People's psychological response to the special events determines the development of mass incidences; 8. Participants psychological response depends on the information disseminated by media; 9. The individual level request becomes mass request; 10. Individual becomes part of social identity in the mass incidence. Conclusion: In analyzing the mass incidence's characteristics and its context, the ten principles can be used to predict and guide management of mass incidence in China when this occurs. | |
