We welcome the positive comments of Dr. Jacopo Colombo towards our novel, family centred intervention designed to optimise nutrition intake. We agree that any intervention should be focused on improving outcomes for those recovering from critical illness. While nutrition is an important therapy which can contribute to improved physical recovery following critical illness, the benefit conferred through optimising nutrition is unlikely to be the same for all patients. Older patients are one group who may be at increased nutrition risk and for whom functional recovery may be difficult following critical illness. With the population of older adults expected to double in the next half century and a greater number of older adults accessing intensive care services, optimising strategies to improve recovery following critical illness in the elderly will become imperative.
