In early 2003, Michelin, the tire maker, adopted the RFID system to track expired and worn out tires, following the enactment of the Transportation Recall Enhancement, Accountability and Documentation (TREAD) Act by the US Congress in 2000. With this system, an RFID tag is embedded in the tires,9 enabling them to be tracked electronically. Figure 2 shows the Michelin's RFID tag.
