As promised by its title and subtitle, this volume combines theoretical, empirical and historical approaches to a number of very diverse topics relating to contemporary Muslim–Christian encounters. The volume originated in a conference held at the University of Winchester in 2008 entitled ‘Interfaith Dialogue in Modernity and Post-Modernity’ but was further updated, amended and expanded on. It consists of 12 chapters covering topics as diverse as lack of female institutional representation in Christian–Muslim interfaith dialogue (the situation is not much different in other religious traditions) and the role of inter-religious dialogue in nuclear (non)-proliferation and disarmament. Throughout the discussion, the centrality of context (what several authors in the volume refer to as the ‘Shifting Third’) in Christian–Muslim encounters, both past and present, is emphasized. And for the right reasons.en_US
