dc.description.abstract | Like many non-Thai social marketers, I was exposed to the life and thoughts of Mr. Mechai Viravaidya— or Khun Mechai as he is respectfully called in Thailand—through social marketing literature, conversations with colleagues working in international health, and through his TED speech. Through these exposures, he came across as an edutainer and a man with accomplishments that very few social marketers have achieved in their lifetime. So when I joined the National University of Singapore for a short stint, I took the opportunity to travel to Bangkok as the coeditor of Social Marketing Quarterly to meet this legendary, enormously talented, innovative, extremely effective, popular, funny, and very humble Thai social marketer and social entrepreneur. In the fall of 2015, we met in his famous Cabbages & Condoms restaurant, one of his many social enterprises that help to found and sustain his social marketing initiatives. When I reached the condom-themed and must visit restaurant one Friday morning, Khun Mechai was ready for me with slides and wisdom. What followed was an intense conversation on his stunning achievements and fascinating experiences in social marketing and social enterprise initiatives over past 40 years in Thailand. After three hours of interaction followed by sumptuous and tasty Thai food from Cabbages & Condoms, I was left with food for thought and lots of emotions about food!. | |
