dc.description.abstract | Research Background
Botanica Soundscapes is a series of 10 original algorithmically assisted compositions delivered to audiences as an augmented reality (AR) experience via a geolocated mobile app. While composition for outdoor AR audio has been technically feasible for some time, as Goudeseune & Kaczmarski demonstrated, easy access for the public to locative media via mobile devices is much more recent as described by Barclay. This project explores how AR soundscapes can enhance the experience of locations in public outdoor spaces, and contribute to the attractiveness of these spaces through aesthetic enhancement.
Research Contribution
The work combines the fields of locative media, augmented reality, algorithmic composition and mobile media streaming to contribute a new set of compositions which demonstrate the possibilities of these fields in partnership. This series of compositions continues trajectories of my work in interactive and generative artistic practices and extends existing work in locative sound scapes to include augmented and generative elements.
Research Significance
I was the composer of the music and developer of the algorithm employed to assisted with the compositional outcome, details of the algorithm were published in 2016. This work demonstrated the capability of extending the algorithmic processes from interactive live performance to compositional contexts. The work was commission by the Botanica: Contemporary Outside Art festival. The festival ran from May 20-29 2021 in the Brisbane Botanical Gardens, however the soundscape continues to be available to the public because of its online delivery. The work was featured on ABC Radio during an interview with me about it on May 13 2021.

gro.description.notepublic | The Botanica Soundscapes is self-guided mobile phone audio-enhanced experience of the Brisbane Botanical gardens using geo-tagged content triggered by location. The sound walk plays atmospheric audio, combining musical and found sounds, that complements the space and presents a unique perspective on being in the gardens.
