Patterns of dying and death are changing worldwide. Most people state their preference to die at home, yet the majority of deaths in developed countries occur in acute hospital settings.1 Concerns about the management of pain and other symptoms at home, feelings of uncertainty, caregiver burden,2 limited resources and geographic challenges for rurally-located patients3 contribute to the decision to seek hospital admission at the end of life.Patterns of dying and death are changing worldwide.
