Annea Lockwoods Piano Transplant Series, including Piano Burning, reconsider the piano in new temporal conditions – opening the possibility of the change and transformation in sound, shape, function, attention and awareness of our natural environment. This work belongs to durational sonic land art experiments prevalent in the 1960’s, that set up the conditions for experimentation. In this case the piano is set alight, while being performed upon and offers viewers reflections on material, construction, cultural artifacts, values, beauty and death. In this Piano Burning, Vanessa Tomlinson took on the role of performer – choosing to play a duo “with fire”. Using the sound of the fire as the starting point, the fingers played along with the flames in an intimate sonic dance. Curated by English with film by Greg Harm and sound by James Brett, the resulting film became part of Lockwood’s 70th birthday celebrations in New York at the ISSUE program room. This performance was commissioned by Brisbane Festival and curated by Room:40 in collaboration with ISSUE Project Room in Brooklyn, NY. It is a permanent part of the ISSUE archive and has been discussed in interviews by the composer as part of the unsound festival. Having developed a performance practice of the work English and Tomlinson will present this again as part of the RISING festival (the new Melbourne International Festival) in June 2022.
