Abstract
Isaiah Berlin (1953) once classified people as either hedgehogs or foxes. The hedgehogs knew one big thing; the foxes knew many things. T he categories led to innumerable games as people were classified. How best to describe the ideas and interests that people had, and the way that they developed their cases and arguments. Festschrifts provide the excuse to indulge, look back on a person’s body of work and try to decide whether to identify a single thread or to acknowledge the diversity of their contribution.
