dc.description.abstractA numerical investigation using the non-linear Layered Finite Element Method (LFEM) is undertaken to predict the effect of various parameters on punching shear failure behaviour of slab-column connections with an opening and shear stud reinforcement. In all, nineteen (19) models are examined through four parametric studies including the influence of: the empirical models for modulus of elasticity of concrete; empirical models for concrete ultimate tensile strength; empirical models for stress-strain relationship of steel; and the amount of flexural reinforcement. The results from this numerical analysis including load-deflection responses, ultimate shear strengths, deformations and crack patterns are evaluated in some detail. The predicted ultimate shear strengths are also compared to empirical predictions recommended by the Australian, American and British Concrete codes. This study is important in understanding the influence of empirical methods for optimum structural performance of flat plate systems.en_US
