B A chart audit of patients who had undergone a transurethral resection of the prostate established that 15.4% of 156 patients had postoperative acute urinary retention (AUR). Pre-operative prostate size, clot retention, and pre-operative urinary tract infection distinguished men at risk for post-operative AUR. Introduction: Understanding the predictive factors of acute urinary retention (AUR) in patients who undergo a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) may assist nurses in providing targeted health care, which will promote positive patient outcomes. Purpose: To identify predictors that contributed to AUR in patients who have undergone TURP. Methods: A predictive study using chart audits was conducted. An audit tool adapted by the investigators was used for data collection. The audit tool consisted of 20 potential predictors as well as demographic information. The sample consisted of 156 patient charts. A Decision Tree analysis was employed to analyze data. Findings: The study found that 15% of patients post-TURP experienced AUR. Pre-operative prostate size (less than 17.5 g) was found to be the most likely predictor, followed by clot retention and pre-operative urinary tract infection. Conclusions: Proactive nursing in assessing for AUR predictors may positively influence post-TURP urinary retention.
