The Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method (SBFEM) is a semi-analytical computational method developed in 1990s. It is featured by advantages such as significantly releasing the computational burden of large-scale calculations and not requiring fundamental solutions of the governing equation. In ocean engineering, SBFEM has been applied to examine the behaviour of waves when they are diffracted by piles, breakwaters and caissons. In this study, it is extended to investigate the behaviour of both waves and structures when plane waves interact with pile group foundations. A group of three cylindrical piles, one of the most commonly used foundation layouts, is considered in the analysis. Parametric studies are concurrently carried out to gain insight into the physical problem. Results show that the wave number has a significant influence on wave behaviour in the presence of structures, and accordingly the structural response of pile group foundations.
