The Value of Urban Design
Proving the value of urban design is an on-going necessity. Urban Design is a slow acting force but a powerful one that requires continuing advocacy. The first part of this paper presents the methodology that underpinned the reliability of findings from published evidence, for the Ministry for the Environment (NZ) publication 'The Value of Urban Design'., emphasising the interlatedness of issues. The second part highlights the impact that an ageing population and increasing obesity will have on health expenditure by governments over the next forty years, showing the critical need for better urban designed environments to encourage greater activity to improve health. Finally the paper show how guided by best practice an environment can be improved over time.
