Cantonese Opera is one of the more than 300 styles of Chinese regional theatre. This paper argues that it is one of the most important of these styles in the history of Chinese regional theatre. This is shown by the fact that UNESCO recognized it among the very first of the regional styles as an intangible cultural masterpiece of humankind. The paper traces the history of the Cantonese Opera and its role in Chinese regional theatre. It also argues for the immense importance of Hong Kong in the history of the Cantonese Opera.
