Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the link between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The one that has gained the most traction is the 'common soil' hypothesis,1 which proposed that the origin of cardiovascular disease in T2DM is the same as in people without the disease: the confluence of insulin resistance, obesity, hypertension and dyslipidaemia.Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the link between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
