The Wild Rivers Act 2005 (Qld) (WRA) provides a planning and management approach to rivers assessed to have natural values worthy of protection. While sup- ported by environmental and a number of Aboriginal groups, intense debate has occurred over the WRA. At the heart of the objections to the WRA are issues of informed consent by Traditional Owners to declarations, and their concern that economic activities that are of benefit to Aboriginal communities are curtailed. This short article provides a brief history of the legislation, explains the process of declaration and its effect, explores current debates, and outlines proposed changes.
