An ambitious but corrupt courtier, Heshen had Emperor Qianlong's implicit trust and took advantage of his status to influence state matters and fill his own coffers. When his protector died, Heshen was forced to commit suicide. His corrupt and extravagant practices sullied the latter part of Qianlong's reign and were associated with the beginning of the decline of the Qing Empire. Most people in China regard Heshen as the archetypically corrupt official, although there is the possibility that Heshen's bad reputation was a result of efforts by Emperor Qianlong's successor, Emperor Jiaqing, to have the historical record revised to discredit Heshen.
