This chapter focuses on the major progress achieved in different countries in controlling erosion and managing water resources in Vertisols in different climatic zones (humid tropics, semi-arid tropics and arid tropics) of Africa. Progress in identifying and using biological conservation techniques is also discussed. Also covered are the economic costs and benefits of the different programmes, and the reasons why soil and water conservation programmes sometime fail and what lessons have been learnt from these failures.
