The chapter concerns popular and academic attitudes towards the rise of China, focusing on the five or six years since 2005. It argues that the overall trend since 2005 is towards great suspicion of China in Australia, sometimes approaching fear. This anxiety extends to Australia's economic dependence on China, because Australia is still tied to the United States culturally and ideologically, and Australians are very happy for the American alliance to stay in place. The rising suspicion applies especially to popular opinion, with some interesting and important divergent opinion in the academic sphere.
