dc.description.abstract | Modern healthcare is confronted with increasing costs and complexity, progressive population ageing and pandemics triggered by new disease strains and population displacements fuelled by conflicts and climate change. In this context, effective cooperation and interoperability of the participants and their information systems in the healthcare effort becomes paramount. This brings about significant challenges, as healthcare institutions are typically hierarchical and heterogeneous owing to a complex administrative, geographical and historical context. As healthcare complexity and management cost is constantly increasing, governments can no longer rely on traditional healthcare information and organisational paradigms. New cooperative holistic and integrated models are required, taking into account all aspects, elements and life cycles of all healthcare effort participants. Building on previous research and applications, the objective of this article is to employ conceptual development and case study to create a modelling framework enabling the combined use of Information Systems, Interoperability, Collaborative Networks and Enterprise Architecture disciplines towards building the artefacts required for truly collaborative healthcare Information Systems. It is found that this multi-faceted approach provides a feasible theoretical and practical platform for sustainable collaborative IS solutions to long and short-term challenges to population health and well-being. | |
