Pentecostal Church and Megachurch Responses to Post-Christendom Cultures In contrast to those groups that struggled in a post Christendom world, Pentecostalism appears to have grown strongly. Emerging in the twentieth century, Pentecostalism reflects and addresses many developments in a world in which the dominance of Christendom and confidence in modernity has passed, and in which there is increased tolerance of pluralism and a diversity of subcultures, an emphasis on individualism, experientialism, pragmatism, adoption of new technologies, and growth of postmodernities. Pentecostalism has responded to these changes with an emphasis on experiences of God’s presence through baptism in the Holy Spirit and spiritual charismata, egalitarian participation of all members, combining individualism with a strong sense of community, and retention of core conservative Christian beliefs. It has adopted new organizational forms including a youth orientation and megachurches, social welfare concerns and political lobbying. At the same time, concern has been raised by the close alignment of Pentecostalism with contemporary culture, experientialism and consumerism, and disconnection from a rich heritage of Christian traditions. Through a study of Pentecostalism and 21 of Australia’s largest Pentecostal megachurches, this paper examines how Australian Pentecostal beliefs and practices are changing as leaders and participants seek to respond to the challenges of ‘post Christendom’ cultures.
