Abstract

The impact of the Asian financial crisis on China has been overstated. Its recent relatively low economic growth had more to do with domestic deflationary pressures than with the crisis. The crisis has not deterred the Chinese government from merging state-owned enterprises (SOEs) into Korean-style conglomerates. These conglomerates are considered to be the most effective form of organization to spearhead the internationalization and modernization of Chinese industry.
