Abstract
An inclusive Australian identity is being constructed and promoted in contemporary times, yet there is social unrest due to the ongoing endorsement of an exclusive Australian identity. Investigating understandings and experiences of Australian identity is crucial for knowing the implications for social cohesion. This research aimed to explore (1) conceptualisations of Australian identity, (2) lived experiences with Australian identity, and (3) preferences for Australian identity. Four themes emerged from 34 unstructured interviews with Australian citizens. Findings support the innovation of systems that maintain exclusive Australian identity endorsements to work towards social cohesion and establishing an authentically inclusive Australian identity.
