Abstract

BACKGROUND: Daughters of the Floating Brothel is a radio drama that was created with women prisoners at Brisbane Women's Correctional Centre (BWCC), Queensland. This work is situated within the fields of Applied Theatre, Prison Theatre and Performance Studies, and was produced in response to the question: How does radio drama as a form engage women prisoners through process and performance? The work was funded by Arts Queensland with additional funds from the Griffith Institute for Educational Research through the Special Interest Group REACT (Research in Educational, Applied and Contemporary Theatre). CONTRIBUTION: The use of radio drama with women prisoners represents a significant innovation in the field. Most prison theatre practice/research results in, and/or investigates, live theatre and performance, and there is little to no reference to the use of radio/audio drama production to engage prisoners. As a cultural artefact, the work not only represents an innovative performance by women prisoners, but also their interpretation and interrogation of the histories of institutional confinement for women in Australia. SIGNIFICANCE: The creative output has formed the basis for a range of practice-based investigations that are significant to the field, and has been supported through a GIER Research Fellowship. These include investigation into the engagement and representation of Indigenous women prisoners in the drama; a cultural analysis of the piece as an example contemporary performance; and as an example of the Australian Gothic form. The piece will also form the basis for interdisciplinary investigation between Applied Theatre and Criminology/Penology into prisoner engagement and wellbeing through participation.
